Tigers Host Virginia Tech in ACC Opener Friday

Clemson Notes: 

  • The Clemson women’s tennis team hosts Virginia Tech in its ACC opener on Friday, Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. at the Duckworth Family Tennis Facility.
  • The Tigers are 4-4 on the season, opening the year at 4-0 before facing four top-20 opponents in a span of nine days from Jan. 25-Feb. 2.
  • Fernanda Navarro is ranked 64th nationally in singles according to the ITA poll released on Feb. 6. This is the first time this season that the senior from Guadalajara, Mexico has earned a national singles ranking.
  • Navarro is 4-1 in dual singles play, and last week, earned her career-best upset, defeating 25th-ranked Paige Cline of South Carolina in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.
  • Navarro and fellow senior Marie-Alexandre Leduc are ranked second in the nation as a doubles team. The pair is 5-1 in dual matches and has a 17-4 overall record thus far in 2018-19, which includes winning the National Championship doubles title at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships to conclude the Fall 2018 season.
  • Darrell Jernigan, the Tigers’ assistant coach who is now in his seventh season after two stints, 2005-10 and 2017-present, has just been promoted to Associate Head Coach. During Jernigan’s tenure, Clemson has reached the NCAA Tournament all six seasons, and has advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 four of those six years.
