CHARLOTTE, NC. – The Clemson Tigers (5-1) defeated the Charlotte 49ers (6-2) on the road on Friday, Feb 7, 4-3. Freshman Amelie Smejkalova clinched the match for the first time in her career to secure the win.
In doubles, the Tigers battled hard but fell on courts two and three, giving Charlotte the early lead in the match.
The Tigers quickly tied the match to 1-1, with Gaia Parravicini defeating Shona Nakano in an easy, 6-2, 6-1 battle. Romana Cisovska fell to Lucia Aranda, 6-4, 6-0, shortly after. Freshman Artemis Aslanisvili defeated Yelyzaveta Chainykova, 7-5, 6-0, to return the match to 2-2 and tie it up again.
Graduate Sophia Hatton defeated Sara Suchankova, 6-2, 6-4, to give the Tigers the lead again. Annabelle Davis fell to Amira Badawi after fighting hard, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Freshman Smejkalova clinched the match 4-3 to give the Tigers their fifth win of the season after fighting hard against Ni Xi, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. This marks the second match the Tigers have won on the road for the season.
Up next, the Tigers face South Carolina at home in The Duckworth Family Tennis Facility on Tuesday, February 11, at 4:00 PM. T-shirts will be given away to all fans in attendance.
