Rompies Named ACC Player of the Week

CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson women’s tennis player Jessy Rompies has been tabbed as the ACC player of the week as announced by the conference on Tuesday. Rompies, a senior, went 2-0 in both of her singles and doubles matches last weekend to help the Tigers to wins over No. 66 Winthrop and No. 40 Purdue in the ITA Kickoff Weekend. With the wins, the Tigers moved to 2-0 on the young spring season and advanced to the ITA Team Indoors in Charlottesville, Va. Feb. 5-8.

Rompies played both matches of the weekend at number four singles, beginning with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ekin Gunaysu of Winthrop. She then defeated Purdue’s Andjela Djokovic, ranked 105th in the country, by a score of 7-6(0), 6-1. With the wins, Rompies is now 9-2 on the season in singles matches.

In doubles, Rompies and her partner Beatrice Gumulya, ranked second nationally, continued their winning ways with two wins at number one singles. The duo defeated Winthrop’s Garcia and Uzelac 6-1 and Purdue’s Bernard-Feigenbaum and Vidal 6-1. The Clemson duo is 14-1 on the season, including a win at the ITA Riviera All-American and a semifinal finish at the ITA Indoor Championships.
