CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 13th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team fell to No. 15 Michigan 4-2 in the second match of the ITA Team Indoor Championships on Saturday night. The Tigers fall to 3-3 on the season and Michigan improves to 5-1.
In doubles, for the second consecutive match, the number-three duo of Joana Eidukonyte and Daniela Ruiz started the Tigers off with a quick, convincing win. The pair won 6-0 before the team of Beatrice Gumulya & Jessy Rompies, ranked second nationally, fought back from a 4-2 deficit to win 6-4 over No. 10 Bektas and Najarian. Romy Koelzer and Tristen Dewar were down 5-4 on court two when Gumulya and Rompies clinched the doubles point for the Tigers.
Also for the second day in a row, No. 27 Eidukonyte won the first singles match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory on court three. With the Tigers up 2-0, Michigan roared back to claim victories on courts one and two as No. 18 Bektas defeated No. 85 Koelzer 6-3, 6-1 and No. 23 Yurovsky beat Gumulya 6-2, 6-3. With the score evened at two, No. 38 Sarah Lee defeated Dewar and seconds later Sara Remynse bested Ruiz 6-1, 6-4. Rompies won her first set on court five and was trailing 5-4 in the second set when Remynse clinched the win for the Wolverines.
The Tigers play No. 26 Kentucky on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. in the team’s third and final match of the tournament.
