Eidukonyte Wins Singles Title; Clemson Concludes Play at the CCI

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson women’s tennis team concluded play at the Collegiate Clay Court Invitational on Sunday as junior Joana Eidukonyte defeated 18^th-ranked and top seeded Stephanie Wagner of Miami 7-5, 4-6, 7-4 to clinch the singles title. Eidukonyte defeated four ranked players in her five matches and also defeated the top four seeds in the tournament.

Eidukonyte began Thursday’s opening round of 32 with a win over 111^th-ranked Monique Albuquerque of the University of Miami 7-5, 6-4.  In Friday’s round of 16 Eidukonyte continued her winning ways with a win over Virginia Tech’s Elena Cerezo-Cordina 6-3, 6-3. 

Later on Friday, Eidukonyte defeated 87^th-ranked Francesca Fusinato of Virginia Tech 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Saturday in the semifinals, Eidukonyte defeated 71^st-ranked Lina Lileikite of Miami 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.  This was the second consecutive tournament that Eidukonyte made the finals. She fell to Caroline Price of UNC in the Carolina Regionals in October.

In doubles, the duo of Eidukonyte and Ruiz made it to the B final on Sunday, falling to Cerezo/Nandakumar of Virginia Tech 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10).  In the opening round, the duo defeated Solovyev/Milstein of Columbia University 8-3.  In the quarterfinals, they bested Illinois’s Kwong/Casati 8-1 before beating Brendel/ Sahni of Youngstown State 6-1, 6-1.

In singles, also in the A bracket with Eidukonyte, Tristen Dewar won three matches before falling to Stephanie Wagner in the semifinals 6-2, 6-2.

Daniela Ruiz, Carola Pederzani, and Keisha Clousing all lost in the opening round of singles in the B group, though Clousing and Ruiz went on to win consolation matches.

Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies will head to Flushing Meadows, N.Y. to compete in the ITA Individual Indoor Championships Nov. 6-9.  The team will return to action Jan. 16-17 when Clemson hosts the Duckworth Winter Classic.
