Ani Mijacika Wins Flight One Title At Furman Fall Classic

GREENVILLE, SC – Clemson women’s tennis player and 21st-ranked Ani Mijacika captured the flight one championship at the Furman Fall Classic on Sunday morning in Greenville, SC. She upset #20 Amanda Taylor of Vanderbilt in the finals to improve to 3-0 for the fall season. Mijacika dropped the first set, 6-4, before rebounding for wins in the second and third frames, 6-1, 6-2.

Rookie Laurianne Henry fell in her flight three finals match-up to place second in the tournament, suffering a loss to Vanderbilt 73rd-ranked Taka Bertrand (6-4, 7-5). Federica van Adrichem and Alexandra Luc finished second at their respective fourth and fifth flights. Van Adrichem posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Suzie Mansour of South Carolina, while Luc defeated the Gamecocks’ Mikki Jocic, 6-4, 6-4.

In the flight two consolation bracket, Ina Hadziselimovic won over Furman’s Lauren Osborne after dropping the first set (4-6, 6-1, 6-2) to place fifth.

Samantha Eppelsheimer and Kathryn Gerber fell in their consolation round contests on Sunday. Eppelsheimer suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Megan McGavock of South Carolina at flight six and Gerber fell to Penn State’s Sarah Lotto, 6-4, 6-1 at flight seven. Both then finished sixth in their respective brackets.

Tigers Estefania Balda and Carol Salge, who competed in doubles this weekend, will have a short break before beginning competition in both the singles and doubles qualifying rounds of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships on Tuesday, Oct. 2. Mijacika will start singles play in the main draw on Oct. 4 and will team with Van Adrichem in the main doubles draw on Oct. 4 as well.
