Chicago, IL – Clemson center Kyle Young has been named the recipient of the Anson Mount Scholar Athlete Award by Playboy Magazine. The award is given to the top scholar-athlete in Division I college football in honor of Anson Mount, who was the college sports editor of the magazine for 29 years. A $5000 award will be presented by Playboy to the Clemson University General Scholarship Fund.
Young is the 15th recipient of the award. Purdue quarterback Drew Brees won the award last year. Success on the field and in the classroom are given equal weight in consideration for the selection.
Young was a Summa Cum Laude graduate from Clemson in May of 2001 with a degree in secondary education. He was a first-team Academic All-American as a sophomore and a junior and hopes to become just the second offensive lineman in college football history to be a three-time first-team Academic All-America selection this year. On the field, Young was a second-team All-American by Football News and a third-team choice by Sporting News. He had 120 knockdown blocks from his starting center position, most in school history.
Young will appear with the other members of the Playboy All-American team in the October issue of the magazine.
