Watson Named to O'Brien Award Great 8 List

Clemson, S.C.—Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson has been named one of this week’s  Davey O’Brien “Great 8” list.  The eight honorees are determined by voting from the award’s selection subcommittee.

In addition to Watson, the other selections are J.T. Barrett of Ohio State, USC’s Sam Darnold, Eric Dungey of Syracuse, West Virginia’s Skyler Howard, Jalen Hurts of Alabama, Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, and Mitch Trubisky of North Carolina.

Watson was named the Davey O’Brien quarterback of the week for his performance against Louisville earlier this year and was the Davey O’Brien Award Quarterback of the Year for the 2015 season.

In Clemson’s win over NC State this past weekend Watson completed a Clemson record 39 passes in 52 attempts for 378 yards and two scores.  He also rushed 13 times for 35 yards a touchdown.  That gave him 413 yards of total offense on the day and three total touchdowns.   At one point he completed 14 consecutive passes, just one off the school single game record and the best streak of his career.

So far this year he has completed 164 of 258 passes for 1950 yards and 20 touchdown passes.  He is sixth in the nation in touchdown passes..  He averages 318 yards a game in terms of total offense, 16th best in the nation.
