Watson named ACC Rookie of the Week

CLEMSON, S.C. — Freshman quarterback Deshaun Watson has been named the ACC Rookie of the Week. This past Saturday evening, Watson came off the bench and completed 19-28 passes for 266 yards in a 23-17 overtime loss at No. 1 ranked Florida State. Watson also rushed 12 times for 30 yards and scored a touchdown. His 296 yards of total offense were a school record for a true freshman quarterback and his 266 passing yards were the second-most.  Watson is the first Tiger quarterback to win ACC Rookie of the Week honors since Kyle Parker in 2009 for his performance in an overtime win against an eighth-ranked Miami (Fla.) team. Other Clemson quarterbacks who have won ACC Rookie of the Week honors over the years are Rodney Williams (1985 vs. Virginia), Patrick Sapp (1992 vs. North Carolina), Dexter McCleon (1993 vs. Virginia), Nealon Greene (1994 vs. Georgia), Willie Simmons (2000 vs. North Carolina) and Charlie Whitehurst (2002 vs. North Carolina). Watson has been named Clemson’s starting quarterback for Saturday’s game against North Carolina.
