Watkins NFL Rookie of the Month

Watkins NFL Rookie of the Month

Clemson, S.C.—Former Clemson receiver Sammy Watkins has been named NFL Rookie of the Month for October.  The NFL made the announcement on Friday. Watkins, the first member of the Buffalo Bills to earn NFL Rookie of the Month honors, led all rookies in receptions with 19 and reception yards with 366 in October.  He tied for the lead in reception touchdowns among rookies with his former Clemson  teammate Martavis Bryant of the Pittsburgh Steelers.   Watkins had a pair of 100-yard receiving games, including three catches for 157 yards last week against the New York Jets.  That was the most receiving yards by an AFC player for the weekend.  He also caught a one-yard scoring pass with a second left to give the Bills a victory over Minnesota during October. Watkins was named NFL Rookie of the Week for the third time for that performance against the Jets on October 26.  He is the only NFL player to win the award three times so far this year. For the season, Watkins has 38 catches for 590 yards and five touchdowns.  He is chasing Buffalo Bills rookie receiving records held by former Clemson All-American Jerry Butler.  In 1979, Butler had 48 catches for 854 yard.  Those are still rookie records for the Bills franchise.
