Watkins, Davis and Bryant to Miss Boston College Game

CLEMSON, SC – Clemson All-American wide receiver Sammy Watkins will not make the trip to Boston College due to an abdominal virus.  Additionally, second team offensive guard Kalon Davis pulled a hamstring on Thursday and also will miss the trip.  It was announced earlier in the week that wide receiver Martavis Bryant would not travel due to a groin injury.

“Sammy has been practicing, but on Tuesday and Wednesday took himself out late in the practice because he was not feeling well,” said Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney.  “Today he was worse and after going to the doctor it was determined that he needed to stay here this weekend.

“With Sammy and Martavis out of the lineup we will bring Germone Hopper  (freshman wide receiver who has not played this year) with us on the trip. We will only use him in case of an emergency.  It is still our intention to red-shirt him.”

When Watkins was out earlier in the season Charone Peake and Adam Humphries took up the slack with a combined 19 receptions between them.

Kalon Davis was fine all week, then pulled a hamstring today.”

Watkins missed the first two games of the year due to a suspension, but had played in the last two games, a victory over Furman and a loss at Florida State.   He had 10 catches for 76 yards in the first two games and also had six rushes for 95 yards and a touchdown, a 58-yard run against Furman.  He also threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Andre Ellington at Florida State.   He had 228 all-purpose yards in the two games he has played.

Last year Watkins was a first-team All-American as a freshman when he set a school record for reception yards (1219) and reception touchdowns (12).   He had seven receptions for 152 yards in Clemson’s 36-14 win over Boston College last year.
