Trailing 23-14 in the third quarter, the Clemson defense stepped up its play and forced five Wake Forest turnovers in the second half. None were as difficult as Brian Mance’s sideline interception. Demon Deacon quarterback James MacPherson, who had not thrown an interception in 159 pass attempts, tried to throw the ball away, but Mance broke on the play and made the tough pick.
