Football Players Reinstated

July 31, 1998

CLEMSON, SC — Clemson defensive backs Darrel Crutchfield and Alex Ardley have been reinstated to the Clemson football team, Head Coach Tommy West announced Friday.

Both players were arrested on July 9 for simple possession of marijuana in a university residence hall room. West had suspended the players pending review of the facts of the matter.

“All the facts have been reviewed concerning Darrel Crutchfield and Alex Ardley,” said West. “I have talked with the players, their parents, everyone concerned. Both players volunteered to submit to an immediate drug test. After receiving the results from an independent lab, they have been reinstated to our team.”

Crutchfield played in seven games a year ago, two as a starter. The native of Jacksonville, FL and Raines High School had a season high six tackles against Auburn in the Peach Bowl. The sophomore is listed as a starting cornerback heading into this year.

Ardley, a native of Tallahassee, FL and Lincoln High, red-shirted last season and will be a freshman on the Clemson team this season. He is listed as a second-team cornerback heading into this season.
