Clemson running back James Davis is one of 50 preseason candidates for the 2006 Doak Walker Award. The honor is presented by the Guaranty Bank SMU Athletic Forum and Dallas and goes to the top college running back. Davis is one of 10 ACC running backs on the list.
Davis gained 879 yards rushing and scored nine touchdowns in 11 games last year as a freshman when he was named the ACC Rookie of the Year. He finished the year with a 150-yard performance in Clemson’s win over Colorado in the Champs Sports Bowl, and he was named the most valuable player of that game.
Other ACC running backs on the Doak Walker Award preseason list are Josh Allen of Maryland, Micah Andrews of Wake Forest, Toney Baker of NC State, Lance Ball of Maryland, Lorenzo Booker of Florida State, Andre Brown of NCState, Tashard Choice of Georgia Tech, Ronnie McGill of North Carolina and Branden Ore of Virginia Tech. Clemson’s defense will have to face all nine of those opposing players this year.
