Crosby Will Not Make Trip To NC State

Oct. 10, 2001

Clemson, S.C. — Clemson Head Coach Tommy Bowden said Wednesday that freshman wide receiver Roscoe Crosby would not make the trip to NC State with the Clemson football team on Friday.

Crosby has been hampered by a sprained knee much of the season. The 6-3 freshman, who has four receptions this year, first suffered the injury in the first quarter of the Wofford game on September 8th. He missed the Virginia game on September 22nd, then played 13 snaps at Georgia Tech, but did not catch a pass.

In the postgame celebration, Crosby was elbowed in the nose by accident and suffered a broken nose. Last Thursday in practice he reinjured the knee. His nose was reset on Friday. He had an MRI on October 9th and the test was negative. Still, the knee injury is enough to keep him out of Saturday’s game. Bowden is hopeful that he can return for the North Carolina game.

The Tigers are now without wide receivers Kevin Youngblood, Roscoe Crosby, Jackie Robinson and Tony Elliott for Saturday’s game. Youngblood suffered a broken leg in the preseason, while Robinson suffered a broken jaw in Clemson’s only loss of the year to Virginia. Elliott suffered a broken wrist at Georgia Tech. Youngblood, Crosby and Robinson would all be starters if healthy.

Bowden also said that starting cornerback Kevin Johnson and starting defensive tackle Nick Eason would both be questionable for the NC State game. Johnson suffered a broken rib in the win over Georgia Tech, while Eason is recovering from a sprained ankle. If Johnson can’t go, his place in the starting lineup would be taken by Toure Francis, an original walk-on who is now on scholarship. Bowden said that Eason’s starting slot would be handled by either Donnell Washington or Eric Coleman. Coleman, a first-year freshman who has played just two plays, was running first team on Wednesday.
