Clemson vs. Florida State postgame notes

Team Notes

  • Clemson falls to 1-2 with both losses on the road against teams that were ranked in the top 12 in the nation entering the game #12 Georgia and #1 Florida State.  It is the first time since 1966 that Clemson has had to play two of its first three games on the  road against top 12 teams.  This Clemson team is the first faced with that challenge from the ACC since North Carolina in 2001.
  • Clemson falls to 6-6 in overtime games.  After winning its first five overtimes Clemson has now lost 5 of 6.  Dabo Swinney is now 1-2 in overtime games.
  • Clemson won the turnover margin 2-1 this evening.  Dabo Swinney is now 33-4 when winning the turnover margin in his head coaching career.
  • Clemson held Florida State to just 13 yards rushing.  The Seminoles had -12 for regulation.  It is the best rushing defense in a Clemson loss on record.
  • This was obviously the closest Clemson has come to defeating the #1 ranked team.  The Tigers are 0-5 against number-one.  The previous close margin was a 17-14 loss to Florida State at Clemson in 1999.

  Individual Notes

  • Vic Beasley had two sacks tonight and now has four for the season.  He has had at least one sack in all three games this year and his streak is four games in a row going back to last year.  He now has 25 career sacks tied for third in Clemson history with William Perry.  He is just three sacks short of the career record of 28 held by Gaines Adams and Michael Dean Perry.
  • Deshaun Watson completed 19-28 passes for 266 yards this evening.  The 266 yards passing were the most by a Clemson true freshman since Patrick Sapp threw for 273 at Maryland in 1992.
