Clemson vs. Auburn Postgame Notes
TEAM
Saturday marked the first time Clemson opened with a win on the road currently in the Southeastern Conference since 1903.
The Tigers’ win was the program’s first at Auburn since 1950.
Clemson has now won three straight games in the series with Auburn, after losing 14 in a row. The Tigers also won in 2011 and 2012.
Clemson has had at least one sack in 31 consecutive games. The Tigers recorded their first two of the year on back to back plays in the second quarter.
The Tiger defense recorded 13 tackles for loss. Clemson has ranked in the top five nationally in tackles for loss each of the previous three seasons.
Clemson saw its streak of 11 consecutive games with at least 500 yards of total offense end, as the Tigers finished with 399.
Clemson’s 13 points allowed to Auburn were the fewest by an SEC opponent against the Tigers since Kentucky also had 13 in the 2009 Music City Bowl.
Clemson is now 12-2 in games decided by seven points or less since the beginning of the 2011 season.
INDIVIDUAL
Dabo Swinney
earned his ninth win over an SEC team, three against Auburn.
Clemson is now 7-1 in season opening games under Swinney, including three wins over SEC opponents.
The Tigers are 67-4 under Swinney’s watch when leading after three quarters.
Deshaun Watson
’s touchdown pass to
Hunter Renfrow
was the 50th of his career and moved him to second all-time in Clemson history, ahead of Charlie Whitehurst (2002-05).
Watson is now 19-2 as starting quarterback for the Tigers, the best winning percentage in program history for a signal-caller.
Mike Williams
returned to action for the first time since suffering an injury in the 2015 opener. The redshirt junior set a career-high with 174 receiving yards, while tying his personal high with nine catches.
Williams now has five games with at least 100 receiving yards. It was the first time he went over the century mark since the 2014 Russell Athletic Bowl win over Oklahoma.
Wayne Gallman
rushed for 123 yards, his 13th career game with at least 100. Clemson is 13-0 in those games.
Gallman needs just two more 100-yard rushing efforts to match Raymond Priester’s career Clemson record, set from 1994-97.
Gallman needs just 23 yards to move into the top 10 in Clemson’s career records.
Renfrow caught a touchdown for a third straight game for the Tigers. He hauled in a 16-yarder in the corner of the endzone in the fourth quarter.
Artavis Scott
has now caught a pass in 24 consecutive games, dating to his freshman season of 2014.
Dexter Lawrence
played on both sides of the ball in his collegiate debut. He helped block for the Tigers’ opening touchdown, a
Wayne Gallman
run. On the ensuing series, he had an 11-yard sack for his first stop behind the line of scrimmage.
Lawrence was credited with seven tackles from the press box, while also contributing a pass breakup.
Christian Wilkins
started his first career game at defensive end and responded with 2.5 tackles for loss, a pass breakup and sack.
Jadar Johnson
and
Ben Boulware
both snagged their fifth career interceptions in the second half.
Cordrea Tankersley
had two tackles for loss, a single-game high for the senior.
Andy Teasdall
booted a career-long 59-yard punt in the opening quarter.
Greg Huegel
made two field goals and is now 29-34 (.853) in his career.
