Clemson-Maryland Post Game Quotes

Oct. 14, 2000

Clemson Coach Tommy Bowden

“We made some adjustments at halftime. They (Maryland) got a little tired, which we again went to a different blocking scheme and when they fatigued it really helped us. The opening drive or so we had a drive and then had a turnover. Morgan Woodward fumbled on his little route, then Travis (Zachery) had one later. Turnovers, we had two and we’ve got to find some way to eliminate those.”

Did Maryland take Clemson quarterback Woodrow Dantzler out of his game? “You can do that defensively. Defensively, you have the option to take anybody out if you want to, so when you do, we have to make adjustments. We were playing really aggressive up front in the first half, and I thought our offensive line did a good job responding in the second half. If we didn’t rush for 200 yards, it was close.”

N.C. State’s and Maryland’s defense played soft to not give up big play “They are playing soft and not giving us anything deep. A lot of times, the line is not rushing Woody because he creates some seams when they do. They are playing softer on the line of scrimmage. We’ll have to make sure we can execute the passing game as teams learns how to defense us and we’ll have to make adjustments of what he defense does.”

Held Maryland running back LaMont Jordan under 100 yards “He kinda embarrassed us last year He had a great game, their offensive line really did a good job, I think our defense responded well and I think they were determined not to let him have a big game like he did last year.”

Travis Zachery had 151 yards “He’s really doing a good job reading the blocking schemes and hitting the right creases. He runs really strong and aggressive. He had the one turnover, which we’ve got to correct. He’s had two good games back-to-back.”

Maryland Coach Ron Vanderlinden

“I don’t recall seeing so many injuries. “

Is Clemson a top five team? “What are they now, 6-0, 7-0? They’e 7-0, I say they deserve to be ranked as high as they are. They’ve got a lot of good athletes and concepts. They are very aggressive and gaining confidence with every win. “

“We went into this game defensively saying let’s have fun, let’s play enthusiastically, lets fly around, let’s play together, let’s really go after it. I thought for much of the game they did that.”

“We can’t turn the ball over, that’s the first thing that has to happen. The second thing, we threw three interceptions to the cornerback position. We were moving on two of those drives. We’ve just got to be a little more consistent in all areas. I did think (quarterback) Calvin (McCall) did run the ball much more assertively. I thought he did good job expressing the run. That was an emphasis. That was part of our offense that was missing – our quarterback making plays in the run game.”
