Clemson played five first-year freshmen in the game. The listincluded Roscoe Crosby, who started at wide receiver and caught aUtah pass from Woodrow Dantzler on the first offensive play of thegame. The play as good for a 12-yard gain and a first down. Bowdensaid after the game that he had promised Crosby he would run withthe ball on the first play of the season. Other first-year freshmento play in the game were wide receiver Airese Currie, tight end BenHall, defensive end Moe Fountain and star safety Eric Sampson.Crosby was the first first-year freshman to start on a scrimmageplay in the first game since 1995 when Anthony Simmons started thefirst game of the season at linebacker. He is the first offensiveplayer to start the first game of the season as a first-yearfreshman since 1994 when Anthony Downs started at tailback. Itdidn’t take Crosby long to lead the Tigers in a statisticalcategory. The freshman from Union had 64 yards receiving in thegame. Woodrow Dantzler had 46 yards rushing in today’s game andbecame Clemson’s career rushing leader by a quarterback with 1746yards. He broke the record of 1737 by held by Steve Fuller(1975-78). Dantzler is now 19th on Clemson’s career rushing list.The graduate student had 154 yards passing and now has 3613 for hiscareer, sixth on the Clemson list. He moved ahead of his formerteammate, Brandon Streeter, on the Clemson career list. He willneed just 31 yards passing next week against Wofford to move aheadof Homer Jordan, who had 3643. Dantzler had an even 200 yards oftotal offense and now has 5359 for his career. He needs 152 againstWofford to move ahead of Rodney Williams into third place onClemson’s career total offense list. Travis Zachery rushed for 48yards in 15 attempts and moved over 2500 for his career. He is nowfifth in Clemson history in career rushing with 2530 yards. He willneed 42 yards next week to move into fourth place on the Clemsoncareer list. Zachery scored the 40th touchdown of his Clemsoncareer on a five-yard reception from Dantzler. It was his seventhreceiving touchdown as a Tiger. Brian Mance had nine tackles tolead the Tigers according to stats from the press box. It was acareer high. The tackle totals will be adjusted after the coachesgrade the films on Sunday. Braxton K. Williams had two causedfumbles in today’s game. He was the first Clemson player to recordtwo caused fumbles in the same game since Tony DeSue had twoagainst NC State in 1996. Clemson has now won 15 of its last 18season openers. The Tigers are now 77-16-8 all time in home openersand 80-19-8 in overall openers. Clemson will attempt to go 2-0 nextweek against Wofford. The Tigers opened 8-0 last year. However, theTigers have been 2-0 just three times in the last 11 years. WhileClemson scored just 21 points in today’s game, it marked just thesecond time since 1993 that Clemson had scored at least 20 pointsand won the game in its first game against a Division I team. Lastyear the Tigers defeated Missouri 62-9 in its first game of theseason against a Division I team. Prior to that you have to go backto 1993, a 24-14 win over UNLV, to find the last time Clemsonscored at least 20 points and won in its first game against aDivision I team. Holder JeffScott had a 22-yard rush for a touchdown off a fake field goal,a play that proved to be the deciding touchdown. It was Scott’sfirst career touchdown, but his third career rush on a fake fieldgoal. He now has 3 career rushes for 40 yards. Woodrow Dantzler isnow 36 for 49 in his career (passing) in the season opener.
