Clemson, SC – Senior kicker, Mark Buchholz has been named to the 2008 Lou Groza Preseason Watch List. The award is presented to the best collegiate place-kicker. Buchholz is one of 30 players across the United States on the Watch List.
The native of Alpharetta, GA was the leading scorer (114 points) last season for both the Tigers and the ACC. His 114 points set a Clemson single season record. In addition, Buchholz tied for 18th in the nation in scoring and 12th in field goals per game.
The two-sport athlete (soccer) made all of his PAT’s (48) in 2007 breaking Jad Dean’s record of 46 in 2006. His perfect 48-48 season was also a Clemson record for the highest perfect season.
Buchholz converted five field goals between 40-49 yards with three of them coming in the victory against Wake Forest. His field goals of 45 yards or more during that game garnered him another record as the first person in Tiger history to make three field goals of at least 45 yards.
Along with playing football, Buchholz was the starting midfielder for the soccer team in 2007. On some occasions he would play soccer on Friday, football on Saturday, and then return to the soccer field on Sunday.
The award is named in honor of longtime Cleveland Browns kicker, Lou Groza. Groza played for 21 seasons and was an accurate kicker. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1974.
The Lou Groza award will be presented Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center.
