Perry, Belton Tiger Captains

Clemson, S.C.—Former Tigers William Perry and Mitch Belton will serve as honorary game captains for Clemson when the Tigers face  South Carolina State on Saturday.  Kickoff is slated for 12:30 p.m. and both players will be honored prior to the coin toss. Perry is one of the most honored players in Clemson history.  He was a three-time All-American from 1982-84 and helped the Tigers to the National Championship as starting middle guard as a freshman in 1981. He was named the ACC Player of the Year as a senior in 1984. Thirty years after he played his last game at Clemson, he is still third in school history in sacks with 27 and is second in tackles for loss with 60.  Only his brother Michael Dean had more tackles for loss with 61.  William had 10 sacks and 27 tackles for loss as a senior when he was a first team All-American according to UPI, The Walter Camp Foundation and the Football News. He was a consensus All-American in 1983. Perry was a first-round draft choice by the Chicago Bears and was a member of the Bears Super Bowl Championship Team of 1985.  Perry played 10 years and 138 games in the NFL from 1985-94. Belton letter  for the Tigers from 1988-90.  In those three seasons the Tigers won the ACC Championship in 1988 and finished in the top 12 in the nation each year. Belton was a defensive back and dynamic special teams player during his career.  He is still the only player in Clemson history to block two punts in the same quarter, something he accomplished against Maryland in 1989.  He still holds the school record for blocked punts in a season with three in 1989.
