CLEMSON, S.C. – Clemson running back Javis Austin is in critical condition Wednesday night after a gunshot wound to the head.
Austin was admitted to the neuro-intensive care unit of the Anderson Area Regional Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said. The 911 call came in from Austin’s home about 6 p.m., a dispatcher from Anderson County Central Dispatch said.
Details of the shooting were not immediately available.
The 21-year-old junior is a two-time letterman for Clemson. He started the first two games this season and had his best game in the opener against Marshall.
Austin has played in only three of the past eight games. He has had 36 carries for 120 yards in five games this season.
He was the state’s top high school running back in 1997 with 2,389 yards and 32 touchdowns in his senior season at D.W. Daniel High School in Central. His career rushing total at Daniel was 5,088 yards.
