Young Wins Tatum Award

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Clemson center Kyle Young has been selected as the recipient of the 2001 Jim Tatum Award. The Tatum Award is given annually in memory of the late Jim Tatum to the top senior student-athlete among the league’s football players. Tatum, a two-time ACC Coach of the Year, coached in the fifties at both Maryland and North Carolina and believed strongly in the concept of the student-athlete.

Young, a 6-3, 285-pound, Clemson, S.C., product, received his undergraduate degree in secondary education from Clemson in May 2001. Young entered the 2001 season as a graduate student and one of the 24 finalists for the 2001 Outland Trophy. He was named first-team All-ACC in 2000 and second-team All-ACC in 2001.

Young, a three-year starter for the Tigers, is the president of LIFELINE, Clemson’s football team leadership organization, and is responsible for coordinating all community service activities. He was the recipient of the 2001 National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete Award and is on track to become just the second ACC player to be a three-time first-team Academic All-American.

During his career, Young has maintained a career GPA of 3.97 while starting 38 straight games.
