Whitehurst named South Carolina’s Amateur Athlete of the Year

May 3, 2004

Clemson football quarterback Charlie Whitehurst will be honored as the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame’s male amateur athlete of the year at their annual banquet and induction ceremony.

Whitehurst will be honored along with Professional Athletes of the year, Stephen Davis and Kevin Garnett and the Class of 2004 at the SC Athletic Hall of Fame annual awards ceremony and induction on May 20th at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Columbia. Information about the SC Athletic hall of Fame can be found at www.southcarolinaathletichalloffame.org.

The class includes Dick Sheridan, who coached Furman to Southern Conference football domination; two-time American League home run champion Gorman Thomas; former Presbyterian College tennis standout Allen Morris, and five former football stars — Willie Scott and Tom Addison of the University of South Carolina, Jeff Bryant and Dreher “Goon” Gaskin of Clemson, and Charlie Brown of South Carolina State. All but Gaskin enjoyed standout pro careers.

Whitehurst, a Clemson sophomore, started as quarterback for Clemson for every game this season and led Clemson to a 9-4 record and a Peach Bowl victory. He is a classic drop-back passer who completed 288 of 465 passes for 3561 yards and 21 touchdowns. He already owns several Clemson team records and was recently awarded the 2003 Banks McFadden award. In addition to his Football feats, he is an outstanding student who had nearly a 3.4 GPA for the 2002-2003 academic year and was named to the ACC academic honor roll.
