Oct. 25, 2010

BIRMINGHAM, AL–Clemson senior tennis player Derek DiFazio defeated Borja Zarco of Spain 6-1, 6-3 Monday to advance to the main draw of the Highland Park Classic Pro Circuit Futures Tournament in Birmingham, AL. This marks the second straight time DiFazio has qualified into a Pro Circuit Futures Tournament.

Zarco was an All-Conference standout from Tennessee Tech University where he played #1 singles and doubles. Zarco was invited to participate in the 2008 NCAA Singles Championship and defeated Austen Childs (ITA rank #10) of Louisville during the Spring of 2008.

Up next for DiFazio is Ashwin Kumar of the US. Kumar is currently #773 in the ATP world singles rankings and #249 in the world in doubles. Kumar was an All-American standout at Harvard from 2004-2008.

“I’m feeling good about my level of play in this tournament and continuing it into the season,” said DiFazio. “I appreciate very much the opportunity Clemson is providing me with, to play these caliber tournaments. I want to continue to bring home good results for my teammates, coaches, and the athletic department. I’m excited about playing tomorrow and will give my best.”
