Clemson Completes Play in First Two Fall Tournaments

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson men’s tennis team saw its first action of the 2016 fall season this past weekend at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga. and at the Elon Fall Invitational in Elon, N.C. Junior Sam Edwards and senior Christian Harris took second in the Division II doubles draw at the Intercollegiate. Seniors Robert Dudley and Arturo Pinazo advanced to the A1 Doubles Draw championship and Brent Lett advanced to the B2 Singles draw championship at the Elon Fall Invitational but due to weather play was canceled.

2016 Southern Intercollegiate Championships

In Athens Edwards and Harris led the way for the Tigers advancing to the Division II doubles draw championship before falling to Macfarlane and Jaworski of Georgia State 4-6, 6-1, 10-5.

In the Division I singles draw, senior Daffra Sanon, and Sophomore Alex Favrot competed. Sanon defeated Foshey of Michigan State, 7-6, 6-1 before falling to Arkansas’ Salazar 6-1, 6-4 in the round of 32. 15th-seed Favrot fell in the round of 64 to Sanjurjo of Arkansas’, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 and then fell in the consolation round to Virginia Tech’s Corbett, 6-4, 6-4. The French duo of Favrot and Sanon teamed up in doubles where they fell in the round of 32 by way of Swank and Dennis from South Carolina.

In the Division II singles draw, Edwards advanced to the round of 32 defeating Belmont’s Collins, 6-2, 6-2, before falling to the champion Ingildsen of Florida, 6-2, 6-1. Harris also competed but fell in the round of 64 by a score of 7-6, 6-1 by way of Virtanen of Vanderbilt. In the consolation round, Harris advanced to the second round where he was defeated by Cildir of Lander, 6-4, 6-1.

Elon Fall Invitational

Senior Brent Lett led the way in Elon, N.C. advancing to the B2 Singles Draw championship before his run was halted by weather causing the tournament to be canceled. On his way to the championship, Lett only gave up two sets in his first two matches. In the Semifinals, he defeated Mendoza of James Madison University, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the finals where he would have faced Bernardes of USC Upstate.

Other Tigers in action at Elon were Robert Dudley, Arturo Pinazo, and Jess Jones. In the A1 Singles Draw, Dudley advanced to the second round where he fell to Nicolussi from Old Dominion, 6-4, 6-2. Pinazo who competed in the A2 Singles Draw also advanced to the second round before falling to Torres of UNCW, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Junior Jess Jones fell in his first match and the consolation match.

In doubles play, Dudley and Pinazo teamed up to make a run to the A1 Doubles Draw championship. In the semifinals, the duo defeated Vulickovic and Faria of Coastal Carolina, 8-6 to advance to the finals where they would have competed against Quiroz and Diaz from Wingate. Jones and Lett would play together where they fell in their first match but advanced to the consolation championship where they would have played against Ewers and Garrido of USC Upstate.

The Tigers are back in action on Sept. 30 when play begins in the SC Collegiate Championships in Belton, S.C.
