WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sophomore Matt Laycock scored a goal early in the second overtime to lead the fifth-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels to a 1-0 victory in the quarterfinals of the 1999 ACC Men’s Soccer Tournament at Spry Stadium Thursday.
Laycock scored the game-winning goal at the 106:03 mark with an assist by Michael Bucy. North Carolina fired 12 shots in the game to Clemson’s 10. Tiger goalkeeper Josh Campbell saved six shots while North Carolina goalie Michael Ueltschey tallied four saves.
With the win, the Tar Heels improve to 12-5-1 overall and advance to play the top-seeded Duke Blue Devils on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Clemson falls to 9-8-2 with the loss.
