Top-Ranked Clemson Holds Off No. 21 Wake Forest, 1-0

November 8, 1998

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Sophomore midfielder Mark Lisi scored on a breakaway goal at the 20:31 mark and Clemson held off a furious rally by Wake Forest to earn a 1-0 victory and the ACC regular season title in front of 2,903 fans at Spry Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers, currently ranked No. 1 in the country, conclude the regular season at 18-1 overall, 5-1 in the ACC, while the No. 21 ranked Deacs finish out at 11-6-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the ACC.

The game was a tightly contested match from start to finish, with Wake Forest actually holding a statistical advantage over Clemson in both shots (17-14) and corner kicks (11-5). Clemson got on the board early, however, as Lisi took a pass from junior Jeremy Iwaszkowiec on a breakaway and beat Wake netminder Sean Conner one-on-one from 15 yards out. The Deacons made a strong offensive push in the second half, though, generating several good scoring opportunities late in the game. Tiger goalkeeper Josh Campbell made three of his four saves during that second-half surge, however, and another Deacon scoring chance was saved off the line by defender Jeff Bilyk.

Both teams return to action right back at Spry Stadium later this week, as the 1998 ACC Men’s Soccer Tournament begins here at Wake Forest on Thursday, November 12th. Complete seedings and tournament parings will be released by the ACC Office Monday morning.
