No. 3 Clemson to Host No. 15 Charlotte in NCAA Second Round

Clemson, S.C. – The No. 3 Clemson men’s soccer team is set to host the No. 15 Charlotte 49ers in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 6 p.m. Sunday’s match will serve as the 85th contest, and 32nd appearance, for the Tigers in the NCAA Tournament. The match will be the second time the two teams meet in NCAA Tournament play, along with it being the 22nd meeting overall in the series. Clemson is 11-0-1 while playing at Historic Riggs Field this season.

Series Notes

  • Sunday’s match is the 22nd time the two sides will meet. Clemson leads the series, 11-7-3.
  • Clemson has outscored Charlotte by a 37-23 margin.
  • The two sides first met on Sept. 24, 1980. Clemson won that match, 1-0, over the 49ers at Historic Riggs Field.
  • The last time the two teams met was on Sept. 26, 2017. Clemson won the match, 4-1.
  • The first meeting between the two sides in the NCAA Tournament was on Nov. 23, 1997. Clemson won the match in dominant fashion, defeating the 49ers, 5-0, at home in the tournament’s second round.
  • This will be the fifth time the two sides meet while Clemson is ranked with the top-five nationally.
  • The two teams will meet on Sunday while each slotting into the top-25 of the NCAA RPI. Clemson is ranked No. 4, while Charlotte is ranked No. 22.

  • Clemson’s 65 goals remain the most by a team in the NCAA this season. The team’s average of 3.42 goals per game gives Clemson the most potent scoring offense rating in the nation.
  • Clemson will be making its sixth appearance in the NCAA tournament over the past seven seasons.
  • Clemson is led in scoring and points by Robbie Robinson, with 15 goals and 39 points this season.
  • Clemson is led in assists by Tanner Dieterich. Dieterich, with 10 assists, is the lone player for Clemson to have double-digit assists this season.
  • The Tigers have held an average ranking of 6.58 in the United Soccer Coaches poll throughout the season.
  • Head Coach Mike Noonan will lead the Tigers into the program’s 13th NCAA match under his direction on Sunday night.

Charlotte Notes

  • Charlotte advanced out of its first round match by defeating the Mercer Bears, 3-1, this past Thursday evening.
  • Kevin Langan is in his eighth season at the helm of the Charlotte program.
  • The 49ers are led in scoring by Teddy Chaouche, with Chaouche having scored seven goals and contributed nine assists so far this season.
  • Elliot Panicco has been the lone goalkeeper to see playing time for Charlotte this year. Paniccohas allowed 12 goals over the team’s 19 matches.
