Tenth Ranked Clemson Downs U.S. Under-17 National Team 1-0

Aug 26, 2001

Clemson, SC – Fabio Tambosi scored the winning goal with 15 minutes left in the game as the 10th-ranked Clemson men’s soccer team defeated the United States Under-17 National Team 1-0 in the Bi-Lo Kickoff Classic on Sunday afternoon at Historic Riggs Field. Clemson out shot the national team 16-9. With the win, Clemson ends the 2001 exhibition season with a 2-0 record.

Assisting Tambosi on the winning goal were senior midfielder Ross Goodacre and sophomore forward Andre Borges. Goodacre played a quick pass from the middle of the field to Borges who then laid it off for Tambosi who angled it passed the goalkeeper Adam Schuerman. The goal was the fourth for Tambosi in two preseason games. Last season’s First-Team All ACC goalkeeper Doug Warren played the first half for the Tigers and red-shirt freshman Martin Hutton played the entire second half in goal.

“It was a good game and the heat zapped both teams,” said Clemson Head Coach Trevor Adair. “Our guys did well and we were fortunate to break through and win. I was pleased with the way we found a way to win. I am also very pleased with the progress we have made thus far in the preseason. There is no doubt that Fabio Tambosi is becoming a complete player.”

Clemson’s next action will be on Friday, August 31 as the Tigers open regular season play against Cal State Fullerton in the opening round of the Cal State Fullerton Invitational.
