Number-One Ranked Wake Forest Defeats Clemson 5-0

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina – Marcus Tracy had one goal and one assist, while Jamie Franks had two assists as number-one ranked Wake Forest defeated Clemson 5-0 in an Atlantic Coast Conference men’s soccer match at Winston-Salem, NC Saturday night.

With the win, Wake Forest improves to 5-0 on the year while Clemson falls to 1-3-1 this season. This was the first Atlantic Coast Conference match for both teams. Wake Forest is the defending National Champions.

Wake Forest scored in the 25th minute. Sam Cronin scored off of a saved penalty kick. Marcus Tracy attempted the penalty kick, but the shot was saved by the Tigers’ goalkeeper Joseph Bendik. The rebound came back to Cronin who scored from 10 yards out from the right side of the box for his first goal of the season.

The Demon Deacons took a 2-0 lead as Corben Bone scored in the 30th minute. Bone sent a shot from the center of the box, 16 yards out for his first goal of the season. Jamie Franks and Akira Fitzgerald were credited with the assists.

Right before halftime, Marcus Tracy scored with 2:57 left as Tracy scored his fifth goal of the season with a 10-yard shot from the right side of the box. Franks and Danny Wenzel were credited with the assists.

Wake Forest made the score 4-0 in the 71st minute as Zack Schilawski scored his first goal of the season from 15 yards out and sent the ball into the upper right corner of the goal. Sam Redmond had the assist.

The Demon Deacons scored with 6:20 left in the match as Cody Arnous scored his first goal of the year as he sent a cross from Austin da Luz into the netting from seven yards out.

Clemson will play host to Stetson on Tuesday, September 16, in the Tigers’ next action. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
