Clemson Wins Openers In Men’s Soccer

Clemson, SC – The Clemson Men Soccer started their spring soccer season with two wins at Historic Riggs Field. On Saturday morning the Tigers beat USC – Spartanburg 2-0. The goals were scored by forward Andre Borges and midfielder Paul Souders both during the second half of play. Goalkeeper Martin Hutton who played a solid game recorded the shutout.

The team showed great moments of fine combination play, which resulted in several opportunities during the first half when Fabio Tambosi and Steve Rhyne’s both found scoring chances denied by the woodwork.

Later that evening, the Tigers played NCAA first round participant’s Mercer University. Mercer struck first 23:00 minutes into the second half. But, the Tigers within five minutes equalized the game with a header by midfielder Brad Gibson and went ahead and scored the winning goal three minutes later with another header this time from freshman “utility man” Brett Branan scoring his first career goal as a Tiger. Goalkeeper Martin Hutton came through with several key saves that kept the Tigers close in the game.

The Tigers are back in action on Saturday, March 9th at Historic Riggs for two more games at 11:00 AM when they face Southern Wesleyan University and at 6:00 PM playing University of Auburn – Montgomery.
