Clemson Soccer Players Honored by the ACC

CLEMSON, S.C.—Two Clemson Men’s Soccer players, Thomas McNamara and Alex Stockinger were honored by the Atlantic Coast Conference by being selected for the Weaver-James-Corrigan Award and the Thacker Award.

The Weaver-James-Corrigan and Jim and Pat Thacker postgraduate scholarships are awarded to selected student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate degree following completion of their undergraduate requirements. Each recipient received $5,000 toward his or her graduate education. Those honored have performed with distinction in both the classroom and their respective sport, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.

Student-athletes who play to enter a professional career in their chosen sport were named honorary recipients.

McNamara was named a recipient of the Weaver-James-Corrigan Award and Stockinger was an honorary selection.

McNamara, the Tigers’ captain, scored four game-winning goals for Clemson in 2013 while leading the Tigers (11-7-3) to the first round of the NCAA Tournament.  He is in graduate school working on a master’s degree in applied economics and statistics.

The West Nyack, NY native led the team with seven goals and eight assists for 22 points. McNamara was a first-team All-ACC Player in 2013, a member of the All-ACC Tournament team, a two-time ACC Player-of-the-Week selection and a National Player-of-the-Week selection.

He was also named a NSCAA Second-Team All-American and first-team All-South. McNamara was named a first-team scholar All-American and first-team scholar All-South by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and a first-team Academic All-American by CoSIDA.

He was the 18th person and second men’s soccer player in Clemson athletic history to be named an All-American both on and off the field in the same academic year.


Stockinger graduated Cum Laude with a degree in economics in December. The four-year starter graduated in 3 1/2 years. He returned to his native country of Norway to pursue professional playing opportunities there. During his career, he was named to the All-ACC academic team three times. He played in 74 matches and was a starter 64 times during his four seasons at Clemson.   He had four goals and four assists for 12 points during his Clemson career.   He also took 40 shots and had one game-winning goal at Clemson.
