CLEMSON DEFEATS YALE 3-1 IN BROWN CLASSIC Rhyne scored one goal and had one assist in the match

PROVIDENCE, RI–Clemson senior Steven Rhyne scored one goal and assisted on another in leading Clemson to a 3-2 win over Yale in the Brown Men’s Soccer Classic at Providence, RI Sunday afternoon.

With the win, Clemson improves to 3-1 overall, while Yale falls to 0-2 on the season.

The Tigers’ Landy Mattison opened up the scoring, when he volleyed a ball past Yale goalie Matt Aleksinas to give Clemson an early lead. Aleksinas would finish with three saves in the Yale’s loss.

Yale would tie the game later in the half, when sophomore Jordan Rieger served a pass inside the box to Jake Miller who headed the ball into the top right corner, past goalie Phil Marfuggi.

Rhyne would later score with under two minutes remaining in the half to give Clemson the lead for good. This was his fifth goal of the season. Marfuggi stood strong in the goal for Clemson and finished the game with six saves.

Olatomiwa Ogunsola (Woodbridge, VA) scored 15 minutes in the half to give Clemson a 3-1 advantage.

Lindsey Williams of Yale scored in the final minute of play at the 89:46 mark. He was assisted by Shannon Brooks on the goal.

“This was a very good performance today and for the weekend overall,” said Clemson Head Coach Trevor Adair. “I am very pleased that we were able to go out of conference and out of our region to beat Brown and Yale, both away from home. These are traditionally outstanding programs.”

“Steven Rhyne was terrific again today. His second goal, jut before the half was a big momentum boost for us. In my mind he was the best player in the tournament from an offensive standpoint.”

“We were solid defensively today and created enough opportunities on offense to get the job done. We responded well to the loss to Greensboro by taking two games on the road this weekend.”

Clemson will play at Duke on Saturday, September 18, at 7:00 p.m. in the Tigers’ next action.
