Clemson defeats Virginia Tech 1-0 in Clemson Invitational

CLEMSON, SC–Freshman Mark Buchholz scored midway in the second half in leading Clemson to a 1-0 win over Virginia Tech in a men’s Atlantic Coast Conference soccer match at Clemson, SC as part of the Clemson Men’s Soccer Invitational Friday night.

Clemson improves its record to 6-2 overall, 2-1 in the ACC. Virginia Tech falls to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in the ACC.

Buchholz scored his second goal of the season off a rebound from a shot that hit the right post that was take by James Georgeff. Georgeff and Justin Moore were credited with the assists.

In the final day of the tournament, Clemson will play Hofstra at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 3. Coastal Carolina will play Va. Tech at 12:30 in the opening game on Sunday.

In earlier action today, Coastal Carolina defeated Hofstra 3-2. Boyzzz Khumalo scored one goal and had one assist to lead the Chanticleers to their seventh win of the season.

“We felt like we deserved to win this match. I went in at the half, and I told the team to keep playing hard, and the great defense will enable us to run a play and set up a good scoring opportunity. I am so happy for Mark Buchholz and this team. Our defense played superbly. We did not give them too many opportunities to score.”
