Clemson Defeats Longwood 3-1

CLEMSON, SC – Austin Savage scored a goal today for the third consecutive match in leading Clemson to a 3-1 win over Longwood at Farmville, VA Tuesday afternoon.

Savage is a freshman forward from Summerville, SC. He scored two goals last Tuesday in Clemson’s 6-0 win over North Greenville and scored the game winner in Clemson’s 1-0 upset win over 11th-ranked N.C. State last Friday night. Savage was named the ACC Player of the Week for his performance.

Clemson improves to 5-10-1 overall this season, Longwood falls to 5-11-2 this season. The Tigers have now won three matches in a row.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead early in the second half as Connor Barbaree converted on a penalty kick in the 51st minute. This was Barbaree’s first goal this year.

Nathan Thornton gave the Tigers a 2-0 advantage as he sent an 18-yard shot in the netting for his sixth goal of the season.

Martin Vickerton scored for Longwood in the 81st minute with an assist from Harvey Headley. This was Vickerton’s second goal this year.

Savage scored on an unassisted goal with 4:54 left to go in regulation from 15 yards out for his sixth goal this year.

This was the third meeting between the two schools on the soccer field. Clemson has won all three matches. The series started in the 2005 season.

“In the first half, the play was even,” said Clemson Head Coach Phil Hindson. “In the second half, we stepped up and played better. Keegan Priest and Brannon Blanke both played well. It was a total team effort. J.D. Spearman did great in goal for us.”

J.D. Spearman started at goal for the Tigers. The sophomore from Summerville, SC finished the match with one save. This was his first career start.

Clemson will play host to ACC-foe North Carolina on Friday, November 6, at 7:00 p.m. at Historic Riggs Field.
