Providence, RI – Steven Rhyne scored midway in the first half in leading Clemson to a 1-0 win over Brown in the first day of the seventh annual adidas Brown Classic at Providence, RI Friday night.
With the win, Clemson improves to 2-1 on the year, while Brown falls to 0-2 on the season.
Rhyne scored his third goal of the year at the 27:01 mark. Rhyne beat his man one-on-one inside the box and managed to get his own rebound after senior goalkeeper Chris Gomez (Huntington Beach, CA) made the initial save. Rhyne fired back a shot from about five yards out that landed in the top inside corner of the net.
The action will continue on Sunday as Clemson will play Yale at 11:00 a.m. Brown will face San Francisco at 1:30 p.m. in the conclusion of the Classic. In today’s first game, the Dons were victorious over Yale, 2-1 in overtime.
“This was a great team performance,” said Clemson Head Coach Trevor Adair. “It was a big turnaround from last week’s match. We played great defensively tonight.”
The Tigers’ goalkeeper Phil Marfuggi made seven saves in the match.
