Clemson Clashes With College of Charleston

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson men’s soccer team returns home to face its third opponent from the state of South Carolina this year when College of Charleston visits on Tuesday night, marking the Cougars’ first trip to Historic Riggs Field since 1995.

Clemson Notes:

  • Clemson most recently saw action last Friday night in a 2-0 road loss to No. 3 North Carolina at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
  • Adrian Nuñez leads the team with three goals on the year, good for six points.
  • Aside from Nuñez, seven Tigers have all found the back of the net at least once this season: Tanner Dieterich (2), Grayson Barber (1), Patrick Bunk-Andersen (1), Malick Mbaye (1), Quinn McNeill (1), John Murphy Jr. (1) and Kimarni Smith (1).
  • Andrew Burnikel, Nate Hall, Johnny Heckman, Chris Matlashewski and Cale Thorne have all added assists, with Barber contributing a pair as well.
  • Keeper Jonny Sutherland has seen the majority of action in goal for the Tigers, totaling 20 saves against 11 goals allowed in 707 minutes over eight matches. George Marks made his collegiate debut in the Tigers’ Sept. 9 matchup with UMass, playing all 110 minutes of the double-overtime match and saving two shots while allowing no goals. Nolan Lennon played the final 11 minutes of the Tigers’ Sept. 18 match against Furman and allowed one goal.
  • The Tigers are led by team captains Bunk-Andersen and Dieterich.

College of Charleston Notes:

  • The Cougars most recently saw action on Saturday in a double-overtime scoreless tie against conference foe Drexel. While the Cougars were outshot 16-11 in the match, freshman keeper Cameron Smith matched Drexel’s keeper with six saves.
  • Junior midfielder Tucker Heffron leads the Cougars with three goals, good for six points.
  • Scotty Frantz, Cole Gulledge, Kevin Harris, Cornell Holland, Rio Murray and Jake Nicholson have also all contributed goals this season, with Murray being the only other aside from Heffron to have multiple (2).
  • Senior keeper Treston Kederer has played all but one match in goal for College of Charleston, allowing 17 goals against 29 saves in 837 minutes over the Cougars’ first nine contests. Smith made his collegiate debut and played all 110 minutes of the double-overtime match against Drexel, maintaining a clean sheet while making six saves.

Series Notes:

  • The Tigers and Cougars have only met seven times, with the most recent matchup being in 1995.
  • All seven matches took place in the decade between 1985-95, and all were home contests for the Tigers.
  • The Cougars have never won against the Tigers, as Clemson holds a 6-0-1 advantage in the series.
  • Over the seven matchups, Clemson has outscored College of Charleston 21-2.
