Blake Brettschneider scored a goal and assisted on the other in leading South Carolina to a 2-0 win over Clemson in a men’s intercollegiate soccer match at Columbia, SC Friday night. It was the season opener for both teams.

South Carolina scored early in the second half in the 45th minute. Mark Wiltse played the ball from the center to Brettschneider. Brettschneider sent a 14-yard diagonal shot to the left wall of the net to give the Gamecocks a 1-0 lead.

South Carolina scored again at the 65:35 mark. Mike Mangotic sent a corner kick to the top left corner of the box from the right side. Brettschneider centered the ball into the center of the box. The ball was headed by Eric Martinez to Will Traynor who headed the ball in the goal from four yards away.

Clemson had two serious threats in the match. The first shot for the Tigers came in the 42nd minute as Nick Burton sent a shot from 10 yards out just wide of the right post at the 41:29 mark. In the second half, the Tigers missed the equalizer when Eric Cava sent a 26-yard shot just wide of the left post.

Clemson will play host to East Tennessee State on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. at Historic Riggs Field in the Tigers’ next action. This will be the home opener for the Tigers.

“Congratulations to South Carolina for winning tonight’s match,” said Clemson Head Coach Mike Noonan. “There will be better days ahead for this team. I thought we had an honest effort from our young players like Jack Metcalf, Cody Mizell, and Alex Stockinger. Blaise also did well in the back. South Carolina did what they had to do to win the game. I’ve seen us play better in the preseason games. Of course we’re disappointed in the result, but we’ll get better. We are going to improve as the season progresses.”
