Senior goalkeeper George Marks has been named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week for the first week of the season, the conference announced on Tuesday afternoon. This is Marks’s second time earning this award, the last coming on the week of October 19, 2020.
The Tigers’ goalkeeper earned the win in both matches this week, moving him into sixth on Clemson’s all-time wins leaderboard with 33. With a one-goal lead and just over four minutes remaining in the season opener against St. John’s, Marks made an incredible game-saving stop to his left on a free-kick attempt earned after defender Justin Malou was sent off with a red card. Had the game been extended into overtime, the Tigers would have been forced to play a man down.
Marks was also the keeper in Clemson’s 5-0 victory over USC Upstate, but the scoreline could have been much different had it not been for his first-half heroics that kept the Spartans at bay and allowed the Tigers to play with a comfortable lead. He tallied four total saves in the match.
Marks will be back in action on Friday night when the Tigers host in-state rival South Carolina at Historic Riggs Field. Kickoff for the match is slated for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on ACCNX.
