Terrific Singles Play Propels No. 15 Clemson Past Maryland

CLEMSON, SC – The 15th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team won all six singles matches in straight sets en route to a 6-1 win over Maryland (5-9, 0-4 ACC) on Saturday at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. The win upped Clemson’s all-time mark over Maryland to 31-3, as the Tigers (8-5, 3-1 ACC) won their fourth straight match overall.  Maryland won the doubles point, but the Tigers did not drop a set in singles in the match. The Tigers will play Sunday at noon against Boston College at home. In the event of inclement weather, the match will be played indoors.  Maryland took a tight doubles point, narrowly avoiding a big comeback on court two to hold on. Clemson’s Beatrice Gumulya and Ani Miao won their match on court three, 8-1 to finish first. However, the Terps took a 4-0 lead on court one, and the teams traded games as Maryland won 8-4, to knot it.  On court two, Yana Koroleva and Romy Koelzer were operating down a break. At 7-6 down, the held a 15-40 lead to break and tie the match, but Maryland’s Nataliya Bredikhina and Olga Bredikhina tallied the next four points to hold on for the 8-6 win and give the Terps a 1-0 lead.  Tristen Dewar evened the match at 1-1 with a 6-0, 6-0 win on court six over Gabriela Srdowoski. It was Dewar’s fourth straight win overall, and upped her mark to 13-9 in her first season.  Beatrice Gumulya, ranked 49th nationally, improved to a team-best 16-4 with a win on court three over Olga Bredikhina. Gumulya has won 27 of her last 31 matches overall, dating to last season.  Freshman Liz Jeukeng, who is ranked 42nd in the nation, also cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win against Sarah Gealer on court two. Jeukeng upped her mark to 11-3 overall, and she is now 4-0 in ACC matches.  The clinching point came in the form of Ani Miao, whose 6-1, 6-2 win on court five upped her mark to 11-7 this season. The last two players to win were sophomores Yana Koroleva and Romy Koelzer. Koroleva, who is ranked 16th in the country, shook off early breaks in each set to win her match, 6-2, 6-3 on court one against Vroni Van Berlo. Koroleva has won six matches in a row, and has dropped just one set during the streak.  Koelzer, who took the first set, 6-1 over Olga Gaistruk, found herself down two breaks at 5-2 in the second set as the Maryland freshman pushed back. Koelzer struck back, however, winning six straight games to close the match, 6-1, 7-5.  After the home weekend with the Terps and Eagles, the Tigers will play on the road at No. 1 North Carolina and No. 7 Duke next weekend.  Tennis Match Results Maryland vs Clemson Mar 30, 2013 at Clemson, SC (Hoke Sloan Tennis Center) #15 Clemson 6, Maryland 1 Singles competition 1. #16 Yana Koroleva (CU) def.
