Clemson, SC-Freshman Paige Ledford scored two goals and Lindsay Browne added a goal and an assist to lead the tenth-ranked Clemson Lady Tiger soccer team to a 4-0 win over Richmond on Sunday afternoon at Historic Riggs Field. The match, which was delayed 90 minutes at halftime because of lightening and rain, was the season opener for both teams. All of Clemson’s goals were scored in the first half of the match. The Lady Tigers out shot the Spiders 22-4, and with the win Clemson improves to 1-0 on the season.
Also impressive for the Tiger attack were Heather Beem and Tatum Clowney who each had assists on Clemson’s first two goals. Clemson’s first goal came with less than a minute gone by in the game when Browne, last season’s National Freshman of the Year, scored off a crossing pass from Beem and a one touch pass by Clowney. Deliah Arrington scored Clemson’s second goal of the match at the 21:25 mark when she split the middle of the Spider defense with passes from Beem and Clowney. Clemson’s third goal came at the 30:57 mark of the first half when Paige Ledford took a throw in from Leigh Clark and beat several Richmond defenders down the sideline and to the goal. Ledford then added her second goal with three minutes left in the first half when she headed in a crossing pass from Browne. Katie Carson played the entire game in goal for the Tigers and registered her 25th career shutout.
Clemson will next be in action on Tuesday, September 4 when they play host to Gardner-Webb at 7:00PM at Historic Riggs Field.
