Clemson Gender Equity Review Updates (As of Aug. 31, 2023)
Clemson’s 2022-2023 roster sizes reflect individual teams’ preferences, uniquely tailored for competitive success at the discretion of each team’s head coach with oversight by the Athletics Department, as well as individual student-athletes’ choices. Overall, Clemson’s women’s teams’ participation continues to grow. The new women’s lacrosse program had 28 female student-athletes during its inaugural season in 2022-2023. Clemson’s new women’s gymnastics program will begin competition during the 2023-2024 academic year with a roster of approximately 20 student-athletes, 8 of whom were on campus and training in 2022-2023. Clemson anticipates additional expansion as the women’s gymnastics program begins competition next year, along with other targeted expansion of certain teams’ rosters.
Clemson is proud of its demonstrated history and continuing practice of program expansion for women athletes – women’s softball was added in 2019-2020, followed by women’s lacrosse in 2022-2023 and women’s gymnastics in 2023-2024 – to comply with Title IX’s equitable participation standards.
For 2022-2023, Clemson’s unduplicated female student-athlete participation ratio was 45.5%, and Clemson’s female athletic scholarship ratio was 46.4%. The resulting 0.9% difference is within the “substantial proportionality” standard under Title IX and constitutes compliance with Title IX’s athletic scholarship provisions.
