Stephen Frazier Wong

Position: Head Coach

Stephen Frazier Wong enters his seventh season as head coach of the Clemson rowing program in 2020-21. Prior to his hire at Clemson, Frazier Wong served as head coach at Nova Southeastern for two seasons, claiming the program’s first NCAA national championship in his first season and finishing second at the NCAA finals in 2014.

“Stephen is one of the top young coaches in the nation, and we’re excited to have him lead our program to the next level,” Radakovich said.

Frazier Wong’s first season (2014-15) with the Tigers was a success. Clemson rowers compiled a program-record 3.4 team GPA and placed eight on the All-ACC Academic Team. Seven rowers were named CRCA National Scholar-Athletes, while Samantha Duggan and Milena Heuer earned All-ACC and all-region honors.

The Tigers followed in year two with 12 CRCA National-Scholar Athletes, second-most among all ACC schools. In addition, Paula Wesselmann was a second-team All-ACC choice. Anna Skochdopole ended a decorated academic career with an ACC postgraduate scholarship, one of only three among all Clemson student-athletes.

At Nova Southeastern, Frazier Wong was twice named Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year. He tutored nine national scholar athletes in two seasons, five All-Americans and his squad posted a 3.30 team grade point average each year.

Frazier Wong went to NSU after seven years at the University of North Carolina. He started out as an assistant coach in 2005, working primarily with the Tar Heels novice crew. In 2008, he was promoted to associate head coach.

A 1996 graduate of Rollins College, he rowed collegiately for three years. Following graduation, he coached Rollins’ novice rowing team for six seasons, leading the squad to third-place finishes at the NCAA Division II Championships in 2002 and 2003 and to a first-place finish at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships in 2005.

A 2012 Rollins College Sports Hall of Fame inductee, Frazier Wong competed with the U.S.A. Senior National Team from 2002-05. Racing in the lightweight men’s double in 2002, his boat placed 10th at the FISA World Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland and 18th at the FISA World Championships in Seville, Spain. The next two seasons, Frazier-Wong competed in the lightweight men’s quad boat, placing sixth in 2003 and fourth in 2004 at the FISA World Championships.
