Clemson’s Second Varsity 8+ Advances To The Grand Finals At San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, CA – The Clemson rowing team’s second varsity 8+ qualified for the grand finals in the junior varsity 8+ race at the San Diego Crew Classic to be held Sunday on Mission Bay. The Tigers’ varsity 8+ advanced to the petite finals of the Jessop-Whittier Cup.

In the second varsity 8+ race, Clemson finished second behind Washington to advance to the grand finals. Washington won the race with a time of 6:59.20. Clemson edged Oregon State to finish second with a time of 7:07.46. Ohio State was third with a time of 7:09.17, and Minnesota finished fourth in 7:10.57. San Diego State was fifth with a time of 7:21.82. Southern Cal completed the course in 7:24.62, while Southern Methodist finished seventh in 7:31.89.

“The junior varsity 8+ had a solid race, accomplishing what we set out to do which was advancing to the grand finals,” said Head Coach Susie Lueck. “We are getting fired up for an exciting, fast and strong final race.”

The varsity 8+ competed in the Jessop-Whittier Cup, the premier race for women at the San Diego Crew Classic. Despite a challenging start, Clemson finished sixth with a time of 7:00.23 to advance to the petite final on Sunday. Ohio State won the race with a time of 6:45.96, while California -Berkeley completed the course in 6:47.91. Notre Dame was third with a time of 6:51.60, and Oregon State finished in 6:54.86. Southern Cal was fifth in 6:58.94, while Tulsa was seventh in 7:18.25.

The varsity 8+ will race at 11:40 a.m. PDT in the petite final of the Jessop-Whittier Cup. Clemson will face Ohio State, Texas, Southern Cal, Miami, Navy and Tulsa. The Tigers second varsity 8+ will compete in the grand final tomorrow at 1:10 p.m. PDT against Washington, Virginia, Ohio State, Southern Cal and Texas.
