The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced its 2005 All-Region selections Friday. The awards, presented by Pocock, recognize the outstanding accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains this season. Thirty-nine schools are represented on the first and second-team All-Region, led by eight institutions that placed five rowers each. Varsity 8+ boats ranked in the top six regionally received automatic selections for their respective nominees.
Clemson rowing, which finished 10th overall and third in the region at last weekend’s Aramark Central/South Sprints, produced All-Region selections in senior Elizabeth Giannini. A Greenville, SC native, Brown was a CRCA National Scholar Athlete as a junior in 2003-04 and is a three-time selection to the ACC Academic Honor Roll. She was named to the first-team All-Region. She also was an All-ACC selection this spring. Giannini, a native of Jacksonville, FL and varsity 8+ coxswain this spring, was honored as the second-team All-Region coxswain.
California, the nation’s #1 ranked varsity 8+, was one of the eight schools that produced five All-Region selections. The Golden Bears, who took over the top spot in the latest CRCA/US Rowing poll this past week, had four first-team selections (Kaylan Vander Schilden, Jelena Djukic, Iva Obradovic, coxswain Remy Hitomi). Yale, Princeton, Brown, Virginia, Stanford, Wisconsin, and Syracuse were the other schools to produce five All-Region selections. A coxswain was selected from each region for both first and second-team representation.
The 2004-05 Regional Coaches of the Year were also selected. The award is intended to recognize a coach from each region that had outstanding success during the 2005 season, or demonstrated great team improvement from the 2004 season, and demonstrated a high level of professionalism and integrity. The five coaches selected were Dave O’Neil (California) from the West Region, Lori Dauphiny (Princeton) from the Mid-Atlantic Region, Will Porter (Yale) from the New England Region, Matt Weise (Michigan State) from the Midwest Region, and Kevin Sauer (Virginia) from the South Region.
