Clemson Women’s Swimming & Diving Team Finishes Fifth At 2003 ACC Championships

CHAPEL HILL, NC – The Clemson women’s swimming and diving team finished fifth at the 2003 ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. The Tigers completed the third and final day of competition late Saturday night at Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, NC. Virginia was the ACC champion, posting 710 points overall. North Carolina finished second with 609 points, while Florida State was third (557 points) and Maryland placed fourth (538 points). The Tigers posted 339 points for a fifth-place finish.

During Friday’s competition, the Tigers’ team of Lindsey Kroeger, Mandy Commons, Courtney Humes and Elise Thieler won a share of the ACC 200 medley relay title, tying with Virginia. The team posted a season-best time of 1:41.65 in the event.

On the final day of competition, Kim Routh finished fourth in the 1650 free, posting a time of 16:32.21. Nichole Carlton placed seventh (16:49.16) and Kim Cober was ninth (16:57.50) in the event.

Commons placed ninth for the Tigers in the 200 breast with a season-best time of 2:18.62. Ashley Shafer and Caitlin Bissell posted season-best times in the event as well, finishing 13th and 15th with times of 2:19.84 and 2:21.96, respectively.

In the 100 free, Clemson’s Christine Woodruff posted a season-best time of 50.97 for a ninth place finish in the event. Jenna Burtch finished the 100 free in 52.20 for 15th-place.

Clemson’s Kroeger and Kate Walker placed 13th and 15th, respectively in the 200 back. Kroeger finished in a season-best 2:02.04 and Walker clocked in at 2:02.82. Kelly Urso finished 20th in the event, posting a time of 2:04.76.

Meaghan Murphy, Mary Brewer and Urso competed in the 200 fly for the Tigers, finishing 19th (2:06.08), 22nd (2:08.32) and 23rd (2:09.40), respectively.

In the three-meter diving competition, Clemson’s Cristina Curtuneanu posted 378.95 points for a 16th-place finish.

The Clemson men’s swimming and diving team will compete at the 2003 Men’s ACC Swimming & Diving Championships on Feb. 27-Mar. 1. The meet will be held at Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, NC.
