Clemson Upsets Sixth-Ranked North Carolina 1-0

Charlie Roberts scored a goal in the first half in leading Clemson to a 1-0 upset win over sixth-ranked North Carolina in a men’s Atlantic Coast Soccer match at Chapel Hill, NC Saturday night.

Clemson improves to 8-7-2 overall, and 2-4 in the ACC. North Carolina falls to 11-3-3 overall and 2-3-1 in league play. The win by Clemson snapped a 14-match unbeaten streak for North Carolina at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, NC. The Tar Heels last defeat at Chapel Hill was to Davidson on September 7, 2002. North Carolina is ranked sixth by the NSCAA and seventh by Soccer America.

Roberts scored the goal at the 37:04 mark. Bradley Gibson started the play with a corner kick. Roberts finished it with a header at the near post past Tar Heel keeper Justin Hughes. This was the third goal of the season for Roberts.

“We played hard and deserved to win,” said Clemson Head Coach Trevor Adair. “This was a long time coming and we needed this win. I am proud of our team, we held together. This will give our team great momentum with the match against Furman next week and at the ACC Tournament. We have our last home match next Sunday against Furman. I want our fans to come out and show support for our team and to recognize our seniors and the fine contributions that they have made to our program.”
