Clemson, SC – The Clemson rowing team faced its stiffest competition of the season on Saturday morning, winning eight out of 15 pieces against Indiana, Marist, and Purdue. Indiana finished just behind the Tigers, winning seven pieces. Clemson’s Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ went undefeated, while the Second Varsity 8+ brought home two victories over Indiana.

Clemson’s 13th ranked Varsity 8+ crew finished first in each of the three pieces they competed in. They finished ahead of Purdue in the first two pieces with times of 5:17.63 and 5:21.5, and finished 18 seconds ahead of Indiana in the third.

Clemson’s Second Varsity 8+ finished just over a second behind Indiana in the first piece, and they came back to defeat the Hoosiers in the second and third pieces.

The Novice 8+ finished second in each of their pieces, and crossed the finish line just .41 seconds behind Indiana in the third piece. Indiana topped the Tiger’s Second Novice 8+ in all three pieces in which they competed.

The Varsity 4+ and Second Varsity 4+ competed in the same three pieces, finishing well ahead of the competition. The Varsity 4+ finished first with times of 6:05.5, 6:09.9, and 6:07.6, while the Second Varsity 4+ finished second with times of 6:18.4, 6:24.9, and 6:20.9.

“We had a great week of spring break training,” said Clemson Head Coach Richard Ruggieri. “The selection was very intense. The racing today certainly gave us the opportunity to prepare for our west coast trip. We look forward to getting faster, and we are eager to race our best.”

Clemson will travel to Redwood Shores, California next weekend to compete in the Pac-10 Challenge.
