Clemson Rowing to Compete in Big 10/ACC Challenge on Sunday

March 31, 2011

Clemson, SC – The 14th-ranked Clemson Women’s rowing team will travel to Columbus, OH this weekend to take on #12 Michigan and #7 Ohio State in Big 10/ACC Challenge. The event will take place on the Scioto River and will feature four of the top teams in the country in Michigan, Ohio State, Clemson and the University of Virginia.

“Our entire team is excited to race the #7 Ohio State Buckeyes and #12 Michigan Wolverines,” said head coach Robbie Tenenbaum. “We all have a great amount of respect for both programs. They are very well coached, and have been at almost all of the NCAA Championship Finals since the inaugural event in 1997.”

The event will feature two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The morning session features Clemson taking on Michigan in each race (2nd Novice 8, 1st Novice 8, 2nd Varsity 4, 1st Varsity 4, 2nd Varsity 8, and 1st Varsity), beginning at 9:00 am.

The afternoon session features Clemson taking on Ohio State in races beginning at 1:10 pm. It is a race of some significance for the Tigers, as Clemson Head Coach Robbie Tenenbaum was an assistant coach at Ohio State from 1998-2006, helping the Buckeyes to 7 straight NCAA appearances and 2 Big Ten Conference titles.

“We had a great week of practice, and after hosting 3 straight home races in March, we are looking forward to the trip north this weekend,” Tenenbaum continued. “This will be the first time the Clemson Tigers have competed on Ohio State’s home course. We have been working hard, gaining confidence over the last few weeks, and I am very proud of the progress everyone is making each day in practice. I am excited to watch everyone battle two of the best rowing programs in the country.”
